Past & Present
Play with two people on one keyboard
Past & Present supports two people sharing one computer and one keyboard. Open the public game page in local mode: Present moves with A and D and jumps with W; Echo moves with the left and right arrows and jumps with the up arrow. A private online room is not needed for this setup.
Start a shared-keyboard session
Load the public game page in one browser tab. It opens in local mode when you are not following a private invitation. Sit so one player can comfortably reach the letter keys and the other can reach the arrow keys. Both travelers appear in the same game view.
Before the first difficult jump, try moving and jumping at the same time. The on-screen control hints show which keys belong to each character. Close any menu or story dialog before trying to move.
Give each player their own set of keys
- Present: A to move left, D to move right, W to jump.
- Echo: left arrow to move left, right arrow to move right, up arrow to jump.
- Use the in-game menu for room restart and the fullscreen control for more play space.
- Both characters need to reach the exit, even though the game is running on only one computer.
Choose a mode for where your friend is
Use local mode when you share a screen. Use Play online and an invitation when you each have your own device. Online play works even if those devices happen to be in the same room.
The menu also contains a two-tab test for checking roles on one device. It is not the normal shared-keyboard setup and does not replace an online invitation. For a first session together, a single local tab is simpler.
If a jump does not register
First try that player's keys alone, then repeat while the other player moves. If a key only stops responding during certain combinations, try another keyboard if one is available; the cause may be keyboard input limits rather than the puzzle.
Also check that the game is active and no dialog is covering it. A low frame rate or an unresponsive tab is a different symptom; the connection and performance guide explains what to compare. Avoid restarting an entire room before checking the controls.
Common questions
Can we play without an internet connection?
Local play does not need a remote room, but the site and its assets must load. There is no promised offline installation or offline mode.
Can I use two controllers?
The current game provides keyboard and touch controls. Gamepad controls are not part of the current supported input setup.
Will I lose local progress if I clear site data?
Unlocked co-op rooms are stored in that browser. Clearing site data can remove those unlocks; there is no account-based cross-device save.
