Past & Present
Fix a co-op connection problem or a stuttering game
Start with the symptom: a friend who cannot join needs an invitation or connection check; a character that responds late needs a ping check; a whole scene that stutters needs an FPS check. Past & Present's online HUD shows ping, FPS, and frame stutters so you can compare both players before restarting.
Your friend cannot enter the room
Use the invitation copied from the active online-room dialog. Opening the public game URL or creating two separate rooms will not pair the players. Wait until the creator's invitation is ready before sharing it.
A full-room message means both roles are active. A role-unavailable message can mean that role is already active or reserved for reconnect. Room ended or expired means the old session cannot resume: create one new room and share its fresh link. Opening extra copies of an invitation is not a way to add more players.
A reconnect message appears
After a disconnect, the service pauses the shared game and reserves the missing role for about 15 seconds. Keep the game open and allow its reconnect attempt to finish. If the connection returns within that window, the preserved session can continue.
If it does not recover, start a new session. A restart of the realtime room service also ends active rooms. Repeatedly reloading both browsers can interrupt recovery, so first read whether the message says reconnecting or ended.
Read ping and FPS together
Ping measures the time from your browser sending a control change to receiving the server's acknowledgement. The displayed value summarizes recent samples; it is not a full measurement of what reaches your eyes. Move your character if the HUD is still waiting for a sample.
FPS describes how often your browser renders frames. Frame stutters count unusually long frames. A smooth display with delayed or corrected movement points toward a different problem from a whole scene that moves unevenly. Neither number alone proves the cause.
- Compare both players' readings during the same problem, not five minutes apart.
- If one view stutters, close unnecessary tabs and heavy applications and check whether the device is overheating.
- If movement delay spikes, pause large downloads and compare a more stable permitted connection if one is available.
- Change one thing at a time, then repeat the same short section. The game can automatically reduce visual detail after sustained slow rendering.
Does the invited player depend on the creator's computer?
In online mode, the game's service runs the shared simulation for both roles. Present controls campaign progression, but Present's browser is not the online physics server. Swapping who creates a room can help compare the experience; it does not automatically repair a slow device or unstable network.
Local and same-device two-tab play behave differently because they run on the shared device. Use the online mode for a two-computer connection test.
Report something we can reproduce
Record the room name, both roles, device and browser, approximate ping and FPS, and the action immediately before the problem. Say whether it affected one player or both, and whether it happened again after a fresh room.
A short clip can help show delayed movement or a fading platform. Crop out the invitation dialog, the browser address bar, and any private messages. Share the public room name, not the private invitation link. You can send feedback through the conversation or post where you found the game; there is currently no built-in bug-report inbox.
Common questions
Can you promise zero lag?
No. Browser performance, devices, network routing, and the service all affect online play. The diagnostics help narrow down an issue; they do not guarantee a particular ping or frame rate.
Does high FPS mean the internet connection is good?
No. A browser can render smoothly while network responses arrive late. Compare ping and visible corrections as well as FPS.
Should I disable browser security or network protections?
No. If an organization's network blocks the connection, use another permitted connection or ask its administrator. Do not bypass its controls to play.
